چکیده

When we study how phonological representations align with syntactic and semantic representations, we principally study imperfect parallelism.1 Prosodic representations must be to some degree faithful to the syntactic and semantic representations they express (otherwise, prosodic cues would not be as useful as they in fact are in syntactic and semantic processing, Wagner & Watson (2010)). But they must also meet purely phonological requirements, having to do especially with rhythm, balance, and the needs of phonologically dependent elements. Satisfying such requirements often leads to less than perfect parallelism across the systems of representation. This much is a virtual truism. The challenges come in understanding what the mechanisms actually are which guarantee parallelism in the first place and departures from parallelism in the second place. Our goal in this paper is to contribute to the project of understanding these mechanisms. We do that by studying two cases in Irish in which full parallelism fails; the two cases are closely related and they interact with one another in intricate ways. Both involve the special status of subject pronouns in the language and their interaction with the inflected verbs that precede them. Both processes also interact with ellipsis in interesting and contrasting ways and thus provide a way of probing how the mechanisms of ellipsis do their work—the means by which syntactic objects are linked with silence. This is not always taken to be a question on the syntax-prosody interface, but it surely should be; after all, silence is phonological and there is no larger failure of parallelism than that in which a syntactic or semantic representation is mapped to silence.

Analysing Irish prosody: A dual linguistic/quantitative approach

A project of Irish prosody is described which attempts to provide not only the basis for a linguistic description of the prosody of Irish dialects, but also the prerequisite quantitative characterization that is needed to allow us to use it for future technological applications, particularly text-to-speech development for Irish dialects. As with many other minority languages, there are particul...

Ellipsis Redundancy and Reduction Redundancy

1 Focus and anaphoric destressing Consider a pronunciation of (1) with prominence on the capitalized noun phrases. In terms of a relational notion of prominence, the subject NP she] is prominent within the clause S she beats me], and NP Sue] is prominent within the clause S Sue beats me]. This prosody seems to have the pragmatic function of putting the two clauses into opposition, with prominen...

Text punctuation and prosody in Greek

A production experiment was carried out, in order to investigate text punctuation, including standard as well as ungrammatical (communicative) punctuation marks, and prosody relations. It is shown that punctuation is directly related to the duration of pauses, leading to the following structure: question mark>exclamation mark>full stop> colon>comma> ellipsis. Pitch resetting occurs in all cases...

A Contrastive Study of Persian and English Written Discourse: Ellipsis in Realistic Novels

This study aspires to examine the concept of ellipsis by comparing and contrasting English and Persian written texts. For this purpose, three Persian novels and three English ones were selected. These novels were analyzed carefully; they were compared and contrasted for types and amount of ellipsis used, through a Chi-square analysis.  The results of the data analysis revealed that various t...

Chapter Three Modern Irish VSO

iv) Evidence from ellipsis phenomena (following McCloskey 1991) argues for a verb raising analysis of Irish. However, following McCloskey (1992b), there is strong evidence from adverbial placement that this is not raising to C° (in contrast to the situation in Old Irish where raising to C° does seem to be the correct mechanism for deriving VSO). With these conclusions in mind we now turn to the...
